In San Diego, a tragic incident occurred where a police officer lost his life and another officer was critically injured after a speeding vehicle crashed into their patrol car, as reported by Police Chief Scott Wahl on Tuesday. The speeding driver also lost his life in the crash.
The heartbreaking event took place late Monday when a vehicle was seen speeding on a boulevard. An officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle refused to halt, leading to a brief pursuit, Chief Wahl informed the press in a preliminary statement.
“Due to the high speed, a supervisor decided to end the pursuit,” Wahl explained. “Two officers in the same vehicle were responding to the fleeing suspect when the suspect’s vehicle collided with their car at a high speed.”
The officer behind the wheel of the police car passed away at the scene, while the other officer was admitted to intensive care, fighting for his life, according to the chief. The names of the officers and the speeding driver have not been disclosed. Several other vehicles were involved in the crash, but those drivers sustained minor injuries, Wahl added.
The California Highway Patrol has been called in to conduct an independent investigation, including a thorough reconstruction of the events leading up to the tragic incident, Wahl confirmed.
“There is a lot of information that will be coming to light, and many questions that we all have,” he remarked.
