Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger administered the oath to newly elected District Attorney Nathan Hochman, promising to overturn George Gascón’s progressive policies and prioritize residents’ safety. The event took place outside the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles on Dec. 3, with Schwarzenegger referencing a famous line from the movie “The Terminator.” The sun shone on the ceremony, symbolizing a new chapter in public safety for a city grappling with rising lawlessness. Hochman, a former federal prosecutor, won the election by a significant margin and vowed to end Gascón’s policies that hindered prosecutions and sentencing enhancements for serious crimes. He emphasized the importance of fair, impartial, and effective law enforcement while supporting his office’s prosecutors. Hochman outlined plans to address racial bias, exonerate innocent individuals, and combat various crimes affecting the community. His initiatives were met with enthusiasm from city and county leaders, signaling a renewed sense of hope and relief among residents.
“Our families, our businesses, our neighborhoods were all the test subjects in these soft-on-crime, ‘criminals are the victims, police are the enemy’ failed social experiments,” Park said. “But that all changes right now today.”
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said it was a new beginning for the county.
“Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter in Los Angeles County’s continued pursuit of justice and public safety,” McDonnell said.
The county’s Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger and Sheriff Robert Luna also spoke at the event. Mayor Karen Bass sent a statement read by her office.
