A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in California on Saturday night as he was returning from work during President Joe Biden’s visit to a star-studded fundraiser in Los Angeles.
The agent discharged his service weapon during the incident, but it is unclear whether the suspect was hit, according to Secret Service director of communications Anthony Guglielmi. The agent was unharmed, but his bag was stolen.
“This remains an active criminal investigation, and further comments should come from the primary investigative agency, the Tustin Police Department,” Mr. Guglielmi stated in a media release on June 17. “Those with additional information about the incident are urged to contact the Tustin Police Department.”
During the incident, there was an officer-involved shooting, as stated by the Tustin Police Department. However, the suspect or suspects were not found.
Some of the agent’s belongings were discovered nearby, and the investigation is ongoing.
The suspect vehicle, described as a 2004–2006 silver Infiniti FX35 or similar model, was observed leaving the scene, with the Tustin Police Department releasing a photo of the car.
It is uncertain whether the agent targeted in Tustin was part of the president’s Secret Service detail.
The event, held at the Peacock Theater, featured appearances by George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and former President Barack Obama, along with performances by Sherry Lee Ralph and Jack Black.
During the fundraiser, President Biden and former President Obama were interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel, discussing former President Donald Trump’s current lead in swing-state polls.
President Biden attended the event following his return from the G7 summit in southern Italy.
The $30 million raised at the fundraiser surpassed the previous record of $26 million from a March event in Manhattan with former Presidents Obama and Bill Clinton.
Former President Trump also held fundraising events in California last week, collecting $33.5 million, including $12.5 million in San Francisco.
