Over the weekend, a United States Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in Southern California while President Joe Biden was attending a re-election fund-raiser in Los Angeles, authorities reported on Monday.
The incident took place at a residential development in Orange County at around 9:36 p.m. on Saturday, prompting a response from the Tustin Police Department following reports of a possible robbery, according to a statement.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the victim was a Secret Service agent who had his bag stolen at gunpoint. During the robbery, the agent discharged a firearm, as reported by the police.
The incident coincided with President Biden’s attendance at a star-studded re-election fund-raiser in downtown Los Angeles, where celebrities such as George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Barbra Streisand were in attendance. The event, hosted with former President Barack Obama, raised over $28 million for the Biden campaign.
It remains unclear whether the Secret Service agent was in California to protect President Biden or former President Obama. The agent’s identity was not disclosed in the police statement, and the Tustin Police Department has not provided further details upon request.
The number of suspects involved in the robbery and their condition following the shooting are still unknown. Authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects, although some of the agent’s belongings were recovered in the vicinity.
Requests for comment from the U.S. Secret Service have not been answered at this time.
