In the wake of what appears to be a second attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump, the Chicago Police Department is focusing its attention on Trump International Hotel and Tower in downtown Chicago.
A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department stated that while the exact number of patrols is not disclosed, they are allocating special attention and appropriate resources to Trump’s flagship property in Illinois.
Security measures have also been heightened at Mar-a-Lago. However, following the apprehension of a man at Trump’s Palm Beach golf course, it remains uncertain if additional security measures have been implemented at the former president’s various golf courses, hotels, and residential towers nationwide.
POLITICO reached out to nine properties across five states, with most either not responding to requests for comment or indicating that security levels have not changed. The lack of clarity on additional security protocols at Trump’s businesses, where he frequently visits, is a significant factor in discussions about whether he should receive increased security in light of recent threats to his life.
The Secret Service, criticized for its handling of the first attempted assassination in July, collaborates with local law enforcement to execute security plans safeguarding the country’s top political figures.
In New York City, the New York Police Department maintained a visible presence around Trump Tower, with marked police vehicles and officers stationed at the entrance. Pedestrians were allowed to move freely near the building as usual.
There has been no escalation in security by the Los Angeles County sheriff in Rancho Palos Verdes, where Trump National Golf Club is situated. Despite Trump’s recent press conference at the course, neither the club nor the Secret Service has requested additional security measures. The club’s general manager did not respond to requests for comment.
A Bedminster police representative declined to comment on security matters at or near the property.
Requests for comment from Trump’s properties in Nevada, Virginia, Florida, and Washington, D.C., went unanswered.
Acting Director of the Secret Service, Ronald Rowe Jr., defended the level of security provided for Trump during a press conference. He stated that the former president’s schedule was kept off the record during a recent round of golf, allowing the Secret Service to implement emergency plans based on the level of protection needed.
Rowe mentioned a “paradigm shift” in security procedures following the July rally incident, which proved effective when a man with a gun was identified near the Mar-a-Lago golf course. He emphasized the necessity of reevaluating protective measures in response to the current threat environment.
