A mysterious monolith discovered protruding from the rocks in a remote mountain range near Las Vegas has been removed by authorities, sparking intrigue as to how it got there in the first place.
The Las Vegas police department announced the removal of the 6-foot-4 prism on X, stating, “It remains unknown how the item got to its location or who might be responsible.”
Found near Gass Peak in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, the monolith’s quick removal was prompted by concerns for public safety and the environment. This incident reignited a pandemic-era mystery that began when similar shiny monoliths reminiscent of the one in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” started appearing worldwide.
Since 2020, mysterious monoliths have surfaced in various locations, including Utah, Romania, central California, New Mexico, and downtown Las Vegas. Each one appeared and disappeared swiftly, adding to the enigma.
Authorities removed the latest monolith on federal land within the Desert National Wildlife Refuge to protect the habitat of bighorn sheep, rare plants, and desert tortoises. The monolith, made of reflective metal molded into a prism, was secured with rebar and concrete.
While the monolith’s removal left a large indentation in the ground, authorities are determining the best way to dispose of or store the massive structure. Photos shared by the police department show the monolith on its side after removal.
The police department advises against wandering off marked trails or leaving objects behind, emphasizing the danger it poses to both individuals and the environment.
