After pro-Beijing candidate Jeremiah Manele won the contest to become the new prime minister of the Solomon Islands in May this year, many anticipated closer relations between the two nations. However, Manele’s swift and significant actions have exceeded expectations.
In just two months, Manele embarked on his first official visit to Beijing, which was praised by the Chinese Ambassador to the Solomon Islands, Cai Weiming, as a “model” of development.
During the visit, Manele did not shy away from affirming his country’s commitment to the one-China principle and unwavering support for China’s positions on contentious issues such as Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Tibet, and human rights—a clear endorsement of Beijing’s controversial policies.
