South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law in response to what he describes as government paralysis caused by his political opponents, who he accuses of sympathizing with North Korea. Yoon made the announcement in a late-night address broadcast on South Korea’s YTN news channel on Dec. 3.
Yoon, a member of the People Power party, stated that the decision to implement martial law was necessary due to the obstruction of government work by his political opposition, which currently holds control of the national assembly. He also alleged that his opponents have shown support for North Korea.
