Incumbents dominated all races, while challengers vied for open congressional positions. In the Indiana primary on May 7, Republican Victoria Spartz successfully defended her seat in the 5th Congressional District against a tough challenger, Chuck Goodrich. Meanwhile, in the US Senate race, Rep. Jim Banks emerged as the unopposed Republican candidate for the seat being vacated by Mike Braun. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are set to be the presumptive nominees for their parties, pending confirmation at their national conventions this summer.
In the 5th District, Ms. Spartz managed to fend off a strong challenge from Mr. Goodrich, despite facing opposition from some Republican voters over her support for aid to Ukraine. Ultimately, Ms. Spartz prevailed, emphasizing her conservative stance on various issues such as government spending and term limits. She will now face Democratic candidate Deborah Pickett in the general election.
In the 1st District, Democratic incumbent Frank Mrvan ran unopposed in the primary and will face Republican Randell Niemeyer in November. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified Mr. Mrvan’s seat as vulnerable, but he managed to retain it in 2022 by a slim margin.
In the 3rd District, Democrat Kiley Adolph secured the Democratic nomination, while veteran officeholder Marlin Stutzman emerged as the Republican candidate. The race promises to be competitive, with strong showings from various candidates.
In the 6th District, Indianapolis City Council Member Jefferson Shreve won the Republican nomination, edging out tough competition. He will face Democrat Cynthia Wirth in the general election for the seat being vacated by Republican Greg Pence.
State Senator Mark Messmer clinched the Republican nomination in the 8th District, defeating notable opponents including former Congressman John Hostettler. The stage is now set for a heated race in the general election. Messmer is set to face Erik Hurt in the general election, after Hurt emerged victorious in the Democratic primary. The current seat holder, Republican Larry Bucshon, opted not to seek reelection. The 8th district, once a swing district, is now considered a safe Republican seat.
In other races, incumbents in Indiana’s congressional primaries fared well. In the 2nd District, Republican Rudy Yakim and Democrat Lori A. Camp ran unopposed in their respective primaries. In the 4th District, Republican Jim Baird secured a win over challengers Charles Bookwalter and John Piper, and will face Democrat Derrick Holder in the general election.
In the 7th District, incumbent Andre Carson emerged victorious over Democratic challengers. The GOP contest between Jennifer Pace and Catherine Ping is too close to call, with the winner set to face Carson in the general election. The 7th District is considered safely Democratic.
In the 9th District, incumbent Republican Erin Houchin easily won renomination over Hugh Doty. Houchin will go up against Democrat Timothy Peck in the November election.
