Legislation to provide additional aid for Ukraine is currently being drafted in the House and will be presented on the floor once members return from their recess, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on March 31. During an interview with Fox News’ Trey Gowdy, Mr. Johnson mentioned that he has been working to gather support for the proposed aid package.
In an effort to build consensus in a time of divided government, Mr. Johnson emphasized the importance of bipartisan support for the aid package. He highlighted the need for innovative measures and mentioned the potential introduction of the REPO for Ukrainians Act, which would enable the use of seized assets from Russian oligarchs to assist Ukraine in its war efforts.
Other suggestions included offering a loan, cutting off Russia’s primary funding source by providing American fuel alternatives, and exploring various options to support Ukraine effectively.
The announcement follows a phone call between Mr. Johnson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where the latter urged Congress to swiftly pass aid for Ukraine. Mr. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical support from the American people and discussed the dire situation in Ukraine due to intensified Russian attacks.
While Mr. Johnson has been a proponent of aid for Ukraine, he has also stressed the importance of addressing border security issues within the United States. The ongoing debate over funding for both Ukraine and immigration enforcement has led to disagreements within Congress, with Republicans advocating for a stronger focus on border policy reforms.
As Congress is currently on a two-week Easter recess, members are expected to reconvene next week to address the proposed aid package for Ukraine. Mr. Johnson’s efforts to navigate challenges within his party and secure incremental wins reflect the ongoing legislative priorities in a divided government.
The speaker remains hopeful for increased Republican majority in the House following the November election. In the meantime, he emphasized the need for unity within the party to achieve legislative goals and demonstrate to the American people their commitment to key issues.
