Jewish communities in Australia have been exposed to chants such as ‘from the river to the sea’ at pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
Amid the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East, the Albanese government has appointed a special envoy to address antisemitism.
Jillian Segal’s selection follows persistent calls from the Opposition to address the issue of antisemitism in Australia.
The government has emphasized its efforts to advocate for a ceasefire and promote a two-state solution at the United Nations.
Given the significant impact of the Middle East conflict on communities across Australia, the federal government views Ms. Segal’s appointment as crucial to ensuring the safety and inclusion of all Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles have stressed the importance of every individual in Australia feeling secure and welcomed in their communities, regardless of their race or religion, and being free from prejudice and discrimination.
Mr. Albanese affirmed that there is no place for “violence or hatred” of any form in Australia.
“Australians are deeply troubled by this conflict and many are suffering. In times like these, Australians must unite rather than be divided,” stated Mr. Albanese.
“Our nation’s social cohesion has been built collectively over generations, and that is why we must all collaborate to uphold, defend, and preserve it.”
Mr. Albanese emphasized the importance of Ms. Segal’s appointment in alleviating tensions in Australia amidst the “devastating conflict” in the Middle East.
Albanese Rejects Judicial Inquiry Proposal
In response to queries about the necessity of a judicial inquiry into antisemitism, Mr. Albanese remarked, “You don’t need an inquiry to know there has been a rise in antisemitism at some universities.”
“Our action is appointing an envoy. We are acutely aware of the events that have transpired.”
Ms. Segal’s background includes her tenure as the former President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) and chair of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce.
Current ECAJ President Daniel Aghion expressed strong support for an Australian envoy in response to an “unprecedented surge” in antisemitism since Oct. 7, 2023.
“We have witnessed antisemitism manifesting in Australian campuses, schools, media, social media, arts and culture sectors, and other segments of society.”
He indicated that a special envoy would offer policies, legislative proposals, and programs to address antisemitism and counteract the resulting harm and social divisions.
“We are pleased with the appointment of Jillian Segal AO to this crucial position. Her deep understanding of the issues and tremendous dedication to the role give us confidence that she will carry out her duties with integrity and distinction,” Mr. Aghion remarked.
Liberal Jewish MP Julian Leeser Calls for Probe
Jewish Liberal Member for Berowra Julian Leeser regarded this appointment as the government’s first concrete action on antisemitism since the conflict began.
He suggested that Ms. Segal should endorse his call for a judicial inquiry into antisemitism at Australian universities.
Mr. Leeser also urged Ms. Segal to initiate an investigation into antisemitism at the Australian Human Rights Commission and within political spheres.
He stated, “The government’s response will be tested by its actions following her guidance on these matters.”
Ms. Segal emphasized that addressing antisemitism in Australia has never been more crucial than it is now.
“Jewish Australians wish to live their daily lives freely, practice and express their religion without fear, and contribute to the diverse multicultural society we cherish in Australia,” she remarked.
“The Jewish community in Australia is experiencing legitimate fears in the face of rising antisemitism.”
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles stressed that the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of prejudice or hatred.
“Antisemitic behavior in Australia, especially its recent escalation, is unacceptable, and the appointment of Ms. Segal demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to combating antisemitism head-on.”
