Steve Bannon’s Trial for Border Wall Fundraising Set for December

Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist, is currently serving a four-month prison term for refusing to answer questions about the Jan. 6 Capitol breach. A New York judge has scheduled a trial date for him in the “We Build the Wall” case for December 9. Despite being excused from attending a recent hearing due to his incarceration, Bannon is expected to be released in late October. The trial, initially set for September, was postponed after he was found guilty of defying a congressional subpoena related to the Capitol breach. Once the jury is selected and opening statements are delivered, the trial phase is estimated to last about a week. Bannon’s attorneys declined to comment after the recent hearing. Prosecutors have accused Bannon of funneling funds to a co-founder of WeBuildTheWall Inc., despite promises that all donations would go towards building a border wall. Bannon, who pleaded not guilty to money laundering and conspiracy charges, has called the accusations “nonsense.” Although he was previously pardoned for federal charges, he now faces state charges in New York. Three other men involved in the case are serving federal prison time. In a separate case, Bannon was convicted in 2022 of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a House investigation into the Jan. 6 attack. Despite his appeals, he began serving his prison term on July 1.
