DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—Heavy Rainfall Causes Flash Flooding in Oman
Heavy rainfall in Oman on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula has led to flash flooding, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 17 lives as rescuers continue their search for survivors. One devastating incident involved a group of school children and a driver who perished when their vehicle was swept away by the floods.
Authorities have also warned of heavy rains expected in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and other regions of the Arabian Peninsula.
Civil defense officials have confirmed the death toll in Oman’s North Al Sharqiyah Province, which has been the hardest hit by the severe weather conditions. The Royal Oman Police and the Omani military are working together to evacuate citizens from flooded areas, as reported by the state-run Oman News Agency.
Flash flooding is a common occurrence in Oman due to heavy rainfall, attracting onlookers to dry riverbeds known as “wadi.” However, these dry riverbeds can quickly fill up during flooding, posing a significant danger to individuals and vehicles.
In Dubai, authorities are bracing for heavy rains starting Monday night and lasting until Tuesday morning. The Emirates’ National Center of Meteorology has issued warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and potential hail, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kph (43 mph). Government schools have announced that classes will be conducted remotely on Tuesday and Wednesday as a precautionary measure.
