Summer 2024 is expected to bring extended periods of warmer-than-average conditions, as predicted by NOAA. Weather forecasters anticipate an unusually hot summer across most of the United States, with above-average temperatures expected from June through August. A summer forecast map released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows much of the country in shades of red or orange, indicating higher temperatures.
The Northeast and major parts of the West are likely to experience the brunt of the heatwave, with some forecasters suggesting that this summer could be one of the hottest on record. Previous record-breaking temperatures were recorded in 1936 and most recently in 2021, and experts believe these records could be matched or exceeded this year.
The Weather Company also supports NOAA’s forecasts, stating that much of summer 2024 could see prolonged periods of warmer-than-average conditions. However, not all forecasters share this outlook. AccuWeather, for example, is set to release its summer forecast on May 1, predicting a milder-than-average summer with occasional hot spots in the Northeast and Southwest.
NOAA meteorologist Anthony Artusa highlighted additional factors that could contribute to elevated temperatures this summer, such as the waning El Niño and the developing La Niña. These natural weather phenomena, characterized by changes in sea surface temperatures, can influence temperatures across the United States, particularly in the Northeast.
El Niño represents warmer-than-average conditions, while La Niña signifies a cooler cycle. These episodes alternate in an irregular inter-annual cycle known as the ENSO cycle. Both phenomena can also impact tropical storm developments in the North Atlantic.
While some regions may experience cooler temperatures, the overall trend is towards warmer conditions. The Plains and the Rockies can expect a drier-than-average summer, increasing the risk of wildfires and drought in western areas. Residents of the Eastern Seaboard may still encounter a soggy summer, while those in the far northern Plains could see lower temperatures.
Overall, summer 2024 is shaping up to be a hot and potentially challenging season in terms of weather conditions.
