MARION, Va.—The individual accused of the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in southwest Virginia and injuring another deputy has passed away in a Tennessee hospital, as confirmed by local prosecutor Phillip Blevins.
Timothy Wayne Goodman, aged 65 and hailing from North Carolina, died early Friday at Johnson City Medical Center, according to a statement from Smyth County Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip Blevins.
Goodman had been facing charges of aggravated murder in the death of Deputy Hunter Reedy on August 9, as well as four counts of attempted murder and using a firearm during a felony, as previously stated by Blevins. The other wounded deputy from Smyth County was discharged the day after the incident and is currently recuperating at home, as per reports from news outlets.
Following an exchange of gunfire with officers, Goodman was also taken to the hospital after sustaining injuries, according to the police.
With Goodman’s passing, Blevins stated, “This marks the end of a significant chapter in this case, but our dedication to supporting Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved, and the entire law enforcement community remains unwavering.”
According to authorities, the shootings occurred during a traffic stop involving Deputy Reedy and police officers from Marion. An investigation revealed that Goodman was engaged in a confrontation with Marion officers and the deputies prior to the shooting, as per the Virginia State Police.
Reedy’s memorial service took place on Saturday at a Chilhowie church, with Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares among the speakers. Reedy, aged 28, attended high school in Chilhowie and served as a police officer there before joining the sheriff’s department. He leaves behind a spouse and three children.
