SMYRNA, Ga.—Two Georgia police officers were injured and a man was killed in a shooting at a suburban Atlanta retailer.
Smyrna Police Chief Keith Zgonc stated that the officers were responding to reports of gunfire and a burglary in progress at Adventure Outdoors, a store with a vast inventory of over 18,000 guns.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered an armed suspect inside the store, leading to a gunfight that resulted in injuries to the officers and the death of the suspect.
The names of the deceased suspect and the injured officers have not been disclosed, but Zgonc mentioned that the officers are expected to recover.
The motive behind the suspect’s break-in remains unclear, with authorities believing he acted alone.
Cobb County police officers also responded to the scene, with shots being fired at the suspect, though details on the number of shots and the officer involved have not been provided.
Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer emphasized the importance of police solidarity in such situations, with a significant number of officers arriving to assist Smyrna police.
“When one of our own is injured, it’s natural for a large police presence to show up. We’re dealing with a high-risk situation involving multiple suspects in a store filled with firearms,” VanHoozer stated.
