The proposal to suspend regular meetings of the Commons committee dedicated to Canada-China relations has sparked deep shock among diaspora groups. In response to this proposal, nine Hong Kong community groups expressed their concern in a joint letter, citing China’s aggressive interference in Canada and calling for urgent action against the proposal. This move was criticized for sending the wrong message that the Canadian Parliament does not fully understand the threat of China’s influence.
The motion to suspend regular meetings of the Canada-China committee was backed by Liberal MPs but opposed by Conservative and Bloc Québécois MPs. If passed, meetings would only convene for urgent matters or special requests. Committee Chair Ken Hardie confirmed the motion’s existence but could not provide details due to the private nature of the meeting.
The diaspora groups emphasized the importance of the committee’s work in addressing human rights violations and maintaining Canada’s values. They called for the committee to continue its vital study of Canada’s relationship with China, highlighting issues such as the participation of Hong Kong police in a sports competition in Winnipeg despite past police violence against activists.
In addition to continuing to hold regular meetings, the groups urged the committee to take action to address a number of issues related to Beijing’s control over Hong Kong and exploitation of the city’s special status in international trade.
“While we appreciate Canada’s ongoing concern and special immigration policies for Hongkongers, more decisive actions are needed to protect national security and uphold Canadian values,” the diaspora groups said. “A thorough reassessment of relations with Hong Kong is essential.”
The joint statement was signed by Canada-Hong Kong Link, Vancouver Society In Support of Democratic Movement, and Friends of Hong Kong (Calgary), among others.
