Taiwan’s foreign ministry has rejected South Africa’s request to relocate Taipei’s de facto embassy from Pretoria to Johannesburg. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa made the request on Oct. 18, citing the absence of formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan and the need to correct the anomaly of having the Taiwan office in the capital city.
In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested the ultimatum and rejected the demand, stating that it violates the 1997 agreement allowing liaison offices in each other’s capitals. The ministry is prepared for various contingencies and hopes for negotiation but is ready for the “worst-case scenario.”
Several countries, including the United States, Japan, and the Czech Republic, have supported Taiwan in its negotiations with South Africa. Despite the Chinese regime’s approval of South Africa’s decision, Taiwan remains firm in its stance.
The ROC, Taiwan’s official name, was established in 1912 in China but relocated to the island in 1949. Beijing’s goal of absorbing Taiwan remains a top priority, with the Chinese Communist Party viewing the island as a renegade province. The possibility of using force to control Taiwan has not been ruled out by Beijing. Please rewrite the following sentence:
“The cat sat lazily in the sun, enjoying the warmth on its fur.”
“The cat lounged in the sunlight, relishing the cozy feeling on its fur.”
