A tragic incident occurred in Queens on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old girl and serious injuries to her 8-year-old sister. The girls were struck by a hit-and-run truck driver while crossing the intersection of 47th Avenue and 46th Street in Woodside around 3:30 p.m., as reported by police and sources.
NYPD Chief of Transportation Philip Rivera stated that the driver hit the sisters while they were in the crosswalk. The driver of the white Ready Refresh delivery truck initially fled the scene but was apprehended one block away.
The 16-year-old girl tragically passed away at the scene, in front of IS 125, where her younger sister is a student. The 8-year-old was rushed to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition with leg injuries.
Witnesses described the heart-wrenching scene, with one witness, Justin Castillo, recounting the devastation he saw. He mentioned the mother of the girls, who was visibly distraught and on the verge of breaking down.
The driver responsible for the incident is currently in police custody and awaits charges, as confirmed by Rivera.
