A suspect opened fire near Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of at least one person and multiple injuries.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported that the shooting occurred just before a homecoming football game at around 5:10 p.m. TSU was playing against Eastern Illinois University at Nissan Stadium.
“Multiple victims have been injured following a shooting on Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue North,” the police announced on Facebook at 6:30 p.m. “The scene is secure, and victims have been taken to area hospitals.”
According to an update from the police, a 24-year-old male succumbed to his injuries, and there were a total of 10 confirmed victims.
“At this point, there are 10 victims confirmed to have been involved in the gunfire, one of whom is deceased,” stated MNPD Public Information Officer Brooke Reese during a briefing.
“Five victims were transported by the Nashville Fire Department to local hospitals,” Reese explained. “Five others arrived in private vehicles.”
She also mentioned that three of the non-critical victims were juveniles who were taken to a nearby children’s hospital.
Reese noted that at least one of the injured individuals was suspected to have been involved in the gunfire.
