Establishment Democrats must take responsibility for their failures, but the left cannot afford to wait for them to engage in self-reflection. The most impactful social movements in recent history did not rely on support from Democratic leadership. Instead, there is a pressing need for social justice movement organizing, the growth of unions, challenging existing power structures, and creating networks of care and support.
It is essential to engage in various interconnected struggles, such as the Palestine solidarity movement, which also challenges U.S. hegemony and colonial power structures. This movement offers opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to contribute, including culture workers, researchers, and workers of all kinds. Supporting frontline efforts to ensure access to abortions and trans health care is crucial. Joining or organizing tenants unions, building upon unionization efforts, and participating in mutual aid groups are ways to make a difference in local communities. Additionally, opposing the construction of cop cities by local governments is a vital act of resistance.
Reflecting on past movements, it is clear that we are not starting from scratch. It is through movement politics, recognizing the limitations of mainstream Democratic leadership, that progress can be made. By turning to and further building upon movement politics, we can work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
We are not starting from scratch.
