PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania holds significant importance for both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in November. However, with their parties’ nominations already secure, the focus shifts to the down-ballot primaries in the Keystone State on Tuesday.
In Pittsburgh, Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) is the first member of the progressive ‘Squad’ to face a primary challenge this year. Despite this, her victory appears likely. Additionally, Democrats and Republicans in various districts will choose their nominees for potentially competitive general elections.
One notable congressional race is the state’s Senate race between Sen. Bob Casey (D) and GOP businessperson Dave McCormick, both running unopposed in their primaries.
Competitive primaries for state offices and insights into the key Pennsylvania suburbs through the dormant presidential race are also on the agenda for Tuesday. Here are five key points to watch:
The ‘Squad’ faces its first test
Rep. Summer Lee of the progressive ‘Squad’ faces her first primary challenge this cycle, marking a significant down-ballot test. The impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict on the race is being closely monitored.
Lee, who was elected last cycle after a tough primary battle, is up against Edgewood Borough Councilmember Bhavini Patel. Pro-Israel groups that opposed Lee in the past have stayed out of this year’s matchup, despite the ongoing conflict. Lee’s strong stance on the ceasefire has garnered support. Outside spending against her has decreased, indicating a less competitive race.
Lee campaigned alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Pittsburgh recently. A victory for Lee would be a win for congressional progressives.
Republicans pick their candidates for key congressional races
Republicans will select their nominee to challenge Rep. Susan Wild (D) in the competitive 7th Congressional District, which includes Allentown and the Lehigh Valley. Wild won by a narrow margin in 2022, making it a targeted race for Republicans.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R) in the 1st Congressional District faces a primary challenge from anti-abortion activist Mark Houck. Fitzpatrick’s strong brand in the Biden-won district gives him an edge.
Democrats will choose their nominee against GOP Rep. Scott Perry, who represents a central Pennsylvania district that Trump narrowly carried in 2020.
Presidential protest votes?
Pennsylvania’s presidential primaries, despite Biden and Trump securing their nominations, are still significant. Zombie candidates on the ballot could hint at voter sentiments.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is the only alternative to Trump on the Republican ballot. A strong showing from Haley could signal challenges for Trump in key regions.
The Democratic race lacks the “uncommitted” ballot line, limiting protest votes. Rep. Dean Phillips is the only alternative on the ballot.
Attorney general matchups
The Democratic contest for state attorney general is a highly competitive race in Pennsylvania. Five Democrats are vying for the nomination, with State Rep. Jared Solomon and Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer leading the pack.
The Republican race features a battle between State Rep. Craig Williams and York County District Attorney Dave Sunday, both focusing on tough-on-crime approaches.
The Northeast Philly primary and Democrats’ dilemma
State Rep. Kevin Boyle, facing a primary challenge, has been in the spotlight due to legal issues. Democrats recruited challenger Sean Dougherty, raising concerns about the party’s majority in the lower chamber.
The special election in the Republican-leaning 139th House District adds to the Democrats’ challenges. The situation surrounding Boyle’s candidacy poses a dilemma for the party.
