Unbeknownst to the Republican establishment, last weekend marked a pivotal moment for their party.
On April 20, House Republican leaders passed a foreign aid package allocating approximately $60 billion to Ukraine, $26 billion to Israel and Gaza, $8 billion to Taiwan, and zero dollars to the southern border. This bill has since been approved by the Democrat-controlled Senate and signed by President Joe Biden.
This vote showcased Republican leadership’s decision to disregard their own constituents in favor of the Washington “uniparty.”
In a move reminiscent of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Republican leaders collaborated with Democrats to go against the stance of their own party, their voters, and the American people. The Democrats on the House Rules Committee broke party lines to overrule Republican objections, signaling a shift from the traditional Democrat versus Republican divide to a conservative versus “uniparty” conflict.
The disconnect between the Washington establishment and everyday Americans is glaring. How can a political party be so out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Americans facing issues like inflation, crime, and societal decay? How can a Republican-led House prioritize the borders of foreign nations over securing their own border, especially as American citizens are harmed by illegal immigrants? How can fiscally conservative Republicans approve $174 billion in direct aid to Ukraine when the national debt stands at $34 trillion, equating to over $250,000 per American household? And how did House Speaker Mike Johnson, who promised that no foreign aid legislation would move forward without border security, succumb so quickly to the Establishment?
In their eagerness to send billions to a conflict without a clear plan for victory, the GOP leadership not only alienated their own supporters but also missed an opportunity to appeal to independent Americans disillusioned with both major parties.
According to recent polling conducted by The Heritage Foundation and RMG Research, three out of four swing voters opposed providing additional aid to Ukraine without also allocating funds for border security. A majority of swing voters in key battleground states believed that the $113 billion already committed to Ukraine was excessive.
Despite efforts by The Heritage Foundation, Heritage Action, and grassroots members to advocate for a national security-focused aid package, powerful interests prevailed, and the bill passed. However, indications suggest that the battle may have been lost, but the war for the GOP’s soul is being won.
