The city of Atlanta has a rich history of name changes. Originally known as Terminus due to its location as the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line. In the 1930s, there was a brief period where it was unofficially called Thrasherville after pioneer John Thrasher. However, in 1842, residents proposed naming it Lumpkin after Governor Wilson Lumpkin, who suggested naming it after his daughter Martha Atalanta, leading to the name Marthasville. After the completion of the Georgia railroad, it was briefly known as Atlanta-Pacifica before settling on the name Atlanta in honor of Martha Atalanta.
