Dr. David Morens exchanged emails with Peter Daszak regarding a grant from the NIH to EcoHealth Alliance for research on bat coronaviruses, as revealed in recent communications.
Congress issued a subpoena on April 16 to Dr. David Morens, a top adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci, for using personal email to communicate in an attempt to circumvent federal transparency laws.
The U.S. House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic demanded documents from Dr. Morens, who collaborated with Dr. Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
In one email exchange, Dr. Morens expressed a preference for using Gmail over his government email due to constant scrutiny under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Dr. Morens instructed to send sensitive information to his Gmail address to avoid potential leaks to the press.
In a separate email, Dr. Morens indicated that he retained minimal emails or documents related to COVID-19 origins and requested sensitive correspondence to be sent to his personal email.

The NIAID, a division of the NIH, was involved in the grant approval process.
Correspondence between Dr. Morens and Mr. Daszak discussed an NIH grant for bat coronavirus research, some of which was directed to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
Following the termination of the grant, Dr. Morens informed Mr. Daszak about efforts to restore it and mentioned Dr. Fauci’s involvement in damage control.
Dr. Morens expressed optimism about reinstating the grant and assured Mr. Daszak of ongoing support from NIH and NIAID.
The NIH eventually reinstated the grant but later prohibited funding to the Wuhan lab over grant violations.
Concerns arose about the origins of COVID-19, with some theories suggesting a connection to the Wuhan lab.
A new subpoena requires Dr. Morens to submit relevant documents to the panel by April 30, including communications with Dr. Fauci regarding EcoHealth or the Wuhan lab.
Rep. Brad Wenstrup criticized Dr. Morens for potential violations of federal laws and called for accountability in handling sensitive information.
Dr. Morens has not responded to requests for comments on these developments.
