A wildfire in suburban San Diego that burned nearly 20 acres near Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has been extinguished as of Wednesday, June 26. Ground and airborne crews worked to contain the flames, which resulted in the evacuation of thousands of residents. Fortunately, no structures were damaged, and there were no reported injuries.
The fire started around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday near Carmel Valley Road and Del Mar Scenic Parkway. This location was the site of a previous vegetation fire earlier that day. Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire at an estimated 19 acres by 5:30 p.m. with the help of air tankers and water-dropping helicopters.
Authorities evacuated around 2,500 people from homes in the area east of North Torrey Pines Road, north of Carmel Valley Road, south of Del Mar Heights Road, and west of Interstate 5. An additional 1,500 residents were advised to prepare for potential evacuations on short notice. A temporary shelter was set up at Del Mar Fairgrounds for those displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
