A report from an insurance crime and fraud prevention group reveals that the Toyota Highlander has overtaken the Honda CR-V as the most stolen vehicle in 2023, ending the CR-V’s two-year reign as the nation’s top stolen car.
According to the non-profit Équité Association, criminals are increasingly targeting vehicles like the Toyota Highlander that can fetch high profits from illegal sales of stolen cars.
Following the Toyota Highlander on the list of most frequently stolen vehicles are the Dodge Ram 1500 series, Lexus RX Series, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.
The report highlights that the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada share common traits such as being 2019 or newer models, having vulnerabilities from keyless ignitions, or lacking anti-theft devices.
Bryan Gast, the vice-president of investigative services at Équité, emphasizes the importance of taking preventive measures to combat auto theft, such as updating vehicle security standards for modern cars.
Earlier this year, Public Safety Canada introduced a national action plan to address the issue of auto theft.
