Many Australians are traveling abroad for cosmetic procedures, but recent research indicates that half the benefits could come from the act of traveling itself.
Researchers at Edith Cowan University in Perth have discovered that in addition to the mental and physical advantages of travel, it can also aid in maintaining a youthful appearance.
“Aging is a natural process that cannot be reversed. However, it can be slowed down,” explained researcher Fangli Hu.
Exposure to new cultures, languages, environments, and relaxation can activate stress responses and increase metabolic rates, stimulating the body’s self-organizing abilities, according to the study.
Travel may even trigger an adaptive immune system response.
“In essence, the body’s defense mechanisms become more robust,” Hu stated.
“Hormones that aid in tissue repair and regeneration may be released, enhancing the body’s self-healing processes.”
Regular physical activity can boost blood flow, speed up nutrient delivery, and assist in waste removal to support self-healing. Moderate exercise benefits bones, muscles, joints, and helps the body’s anti-aging mechanisms.
Australians are well-aware of the mental health benefits of taking time off work, with more companies offering mental health days and shorter work weeks.
The study reveals the anti-aging effects of tourism by applying the concept of entropy—a natural progression towards deterioration.
“Tourism is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle that can contribute to physical and mental well-being and promote healthy aging,” Hu noted.
“When traveling, individuals can immerse themselves in new environments, such as therapeutic landscapes like forests and beaches, which can reduce stress and enhance mental health.”
Being away from routine can lead to increased activity, exploration, and social interaction.
“Travel encourages physical activities like walking, hiking, and cycling, which can improve cardiovascular health, metabolism, muscle strength, and overall body function,” Hu added.
“Interacting with other tourists, locals, or animals can boost moods, reduce loneliness, enhance cognitive function, and promote healthier eating habits by trying fresh local cuisine.”
While travel isn’t always smooth sailing, with missed connections and other challenges, Hu emphasizes that only positive travel experiences have health benefits.
It’s important for individuals to consider their own needs, expectations, and constraints before planning a trip, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a successful vacation.
According to Hu, even short weekend getaways can have health advantages, depending on individual circumstances.
