The term calzone originated in Italian in the eighteenth century and was first introduced in the United States in 1933. It was derived from the word calza, meaning “sock”, which ultimately comes from Latin calceus, meaning “shoe”. The root word calx, meaning “heel”, has uncertain origins possibly linked to Proto-Indo-European roots. The popularity of the word calzone reached its peak in the mid-1990s.
