Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his commitment to the priorities of Canadians despite the NDP’s decision to withdraw from the supply and confidence agreement with his government.
During a press conference in Newfoundland on Sept. 4, Trudeau stated, “I am not focused on politics. I’ll let other parties focus on politics. I am focused on actually delivering the things that Canadians told me this summer they need.”
Shortly before Trudeau’s address, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced the party’s decision to end their agreement with the Liberals, citing the Liberal Party’s close ties to corporate interests as a reason for their withdrawal.
The agreement between the Liberals and NDP, signed in March 2022, involved the NDP supporting the government on confidence matters until June 2025, with the Liberals backing NDP priorities like pharmacare and dental care.
When asked about the agreement’s termination, Trudeau emphasized that his discussions with Canadians revealed a focus on issues such as housing affordability and grocery prices rather than politics. He expressed hope for an election in the coming year, preferably not until the following fall, as the government continues to work on delivering for Canadians.
Looking ahead to the upcoming election before October 2025, Trudeau emphasized that the Liberals would present a contrast to the federal Conservatives, whom he accused of aiming to cut essential programs for Canadians.
