The Republican leaders were briefed on the impacts of Hurricane Helene in Georgia.
Former President Donald Trump and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp made a joint appearance in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, marking their first public outing together in four years. Despite past disagreements, they received a briefing from local officials in Evans before addressing the media at a press conference.
Trump expressed that his relationship with the governor was “great,” despite their previous differences. Prior to the 2020 election, their rapport was positive, but soured when Kemp did not support Trump’s claims of election fraud.
During his visit to Georgia, Trump also stopped in North Carolina, another state affected by Hurricane Helene. The storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Florida before causing devastating flooding in the Southeast.
In Georgia, the storm claimed 33 lives and caused significant damage to the state’s agricultural industry. Kemp highlighted the destruction of crops, dairy farms, poultry houses, and timberland caused by Hurricane Helene.
Republicans, including Trump, criticized the Biden administration’s response to the disaster, claiming that FEMA funds were mismanaged. FEMA denied these claims, stating that disaster relief funds were dedicated solely to disaster efforts.
Overall, the aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left a trail of destruction in Georgia and other states, prompting ongoing recovery efforts as the hurricane season continues.
