Following the recent presidential debate on June 27, a new bipartisan poll conducted in Wisconsin reveals that former President Donald J. Trump is leading President Biden by five percentage points in the swing state, with 50 percent support compared to Biden’s 45 percent. In a ballot including third-party candidates, Trump holds a six-point lead, with independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. garnering 9 percent of the vote.
Interestingly, Biden is significantly behind Senator Tammy Baldwin, the Democratic incumbent, who enjoys the backing of 50 percent of likely voters in her race against Republican challenger Eric Hovde.
The survey, conducted by Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research on behalf of AARP, indicates that Biden is trailing Trump by seven percentage points among voters aged 50 and older in the state.
Notably, Biden’s support among younger voters is also lacking. While he is tied with Trump among voters under 50, Baldwin leads the group by a significant 14 percentage points.
The poll suggests that much of Trump’s strength in Wisconsin stems from solidifying support among Republicans, with Trump securing 93 percent of Republican voters in a multi-candidate field, compared to Biden’s 86 percent support among Democrats in a similar scenario. Additionally, 10 percent of Wisconsin Democrats express intent to vote for a third-party candidate.
Public opinion on Trump’s tenure in office appears to be boosting his candidacy, as over half of Wisconsin voters strongly approve of his performance, in contrast to 39 percent who strongly approve of Biden’s job performance.
The survey indicates that across various demographic groups, the majority believe Trump emerged as the winner of the recent debate. Notably, swing voters over 50, a key demographic in the poll, overwhelmingly viewed Trump as the debate’s victor.
