David Perdue, former Georgia senator, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next U.S. ambassador to China. Perdue expressed his honor in accepting the nomination and pledged to uphold American interests in China.
Trump announced the nomination in a Dec. 5 Truth Social post, highlighting Perdue’s extensive background as a Fortune 500 CEO with a 40-year international business career. Trump emphasized Perdue’s experience living in Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as his service on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Armed Services Committee.
Perdue, who lost his Senate seat in 2021 and finished second in the 2022 Georgia gubernatorial primary, expressed his gratitude for the nomination via social media platform X.
“Having lived in Asia on two occasions, I understand the gravity of this responsibility and look forward to implementing President Trump’s strategy to make the world safe again and to represent the United States’ interests in China,” Perdue wrote.
Trump, set to take office in January, has vowed to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports, citing Beijing’s broken promises. Perdue has a history of being critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and has called for action against China’s practices.
Calling Out Beijing’s Agenda
In January 2020, Perdue applauded Trump’s signing of phase one of the trade deal with China, stating that it would benefit American workers, farmers, and businesses.
Perdue has also criticized China’s Belt and Road Initiative, expressing concern over China’s economic dominance goals. He has called for the U.S. to counter China’s influence in the global economic landscape.
