The Wilmington, North Carolina Trump campaign rally scheduled for April 20 was postponed due to severe thunderstorms, making it President Trump’s first rally after the first week of his criminal trial in New York City. Despite a crowd gathering at the Wilmington International Airport, with lightning streaks visible in the distance, the event had to be called off for safety reasons. Former President Trump addressed the crowd via telephone, expressing regret and assuring them that the rally would be rescheduled at the same site soon. This setback highlights the challenge of conducting a presidential campaign while facing legal proceedings. North Carolina, a state crucial for both parties, remains a battleground as President Trump’s margin of victory decreased in 2020. The trial in New York is part of a series of criminal prosecutions against President Trump, with claims of politically motivated interference in the election process. The trial is expected to last several weeks, with a federal trial in Miami scheduled to begin in May. The former president is facing a total of 40 felony counts, which include allegations of illegally retaining classified documents after leaving the White House. In addition to these charges, he also faces federal criminal charges in Washington for his alleged involvement in the events of Jan. 6, as well as state charges in Georgia for his alleged role in a scheme to overturn the 2020 election results. Trial dates for both cases have not been set yet.
