Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum informed President Trump about Mexico’s efforts to assist migrants, which have helped alleviate the border situation.
President-elect Donald Trump announced on Nov. 27 that President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico agreed to prevent illegal immigrants from reaching the southern border.
“We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon, and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico,” she wrote in Spanish.
“We also discussed enhancing collaboration on security issues while respecting our sovereignty and the campaign we are conducting in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl.”
“We reaffirm that Mexico’s stance is not to close borders but to establish connections between governments and peoples,” she stated.
Sheinbaum’s office and Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Two days prior to their conversation, Trump announced plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada to pressure both nations to enhance border security and address the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until Drugs, especially Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens cease this Invasion of our Country!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In response, Sheinbaum expressed a willingness to collaborate with Trump but warned of retaliatory tariffs from Mexico if he followed through on his threat.
“One tariff will lead to another, and so on, putting our mutual businesses at risk,” she cautioned.
Sheinbaum also indicated that Mexico is ready to assist in combating the fentanyl crisis in the United States, noting a decrease in illegal border crossings and the absence of immigrant caravans at the southern border.
Furthermore, Sheinbaum shifted blame to Americans for drug consumption and American companies for producing guns that end up in Mexico and are used by cartels.
“We do not manufacture weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs. Unfortunately, our people are victims of crime fueled by demand in your country,” she explained, attributing the production of fentanyl’s precursor chemicals to Chinese companies.
