President-elect Donald Trump is set to announce his economic team selections next week, with two strong contenders vying for the top treasury position, according to Corey Lewandowski, a senior adviser to the incoming president.
“Next week is when the president’s team is scheduled to roll out the economic team that includes the national economic adviser, the Council on Economic Advisers, and others,” Lewandowski said in an interview on NewsNation.
“This week was Homeland Security week, and you’ve seen that,” he added.
Trump recently made high-profile nominations for his national security team, tapping into sitting and former members of Congress. Notable appointments include Rep. Mike Waltz as national security adviser, Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state, former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence, and former Texas congressman John Ratcliffe as CIA director.
Additionally, Trump selected Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense, Kristi Noem as secretary of homeland security, Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel, and Steven Witkoff as special envoy for the Middle East.
The Cabinet appointments are awaiting Senate confirmation.
Treasury Secretary Contenders
Lewandowski revealed that the top contenders for secretary of treasury are Square Group founder Scott Bessent and Cantor Fitzgerald Chair and CEO Howard Lutnick, who also co-chairs Trump’s transition team.
Trump is seeking a Treasury chief who can revitalize the economy, maintain low interest rates, and boost domestic manufacturing, according to Lewandowski.
“Both candidates have extensive experience on Wall Street and are recognized as experts in their respective field,” Lewandowski said of Bessent and Lutnick.
Senator Lindsey Graham has endorsed Bessent, calling him an “outstanding” choice. Meanwhile, Elon Musk appears to support Lutnick, who has been appointed by Trump to a new government efficiency role.
“Courage during tough times is a great virtue,” Musk wrote on Saturday, praising Lutnick’s role in making free speech platform Rumble public.
“My view [for what it’s worth] is that Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas [Lutnick] will actually enact change,” Musk stated in an earlier post.
