The Trump administration has announced the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the halt of future U.S. funding to the organization. This decision was made citing the WHO’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday, outlining the reasons behind the withdrawal. The order highlighted the WHO’s failure to effectively handle the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China, as well as its inability to address other global health crises. It also emphasized the organization’s lack of urgent reforms and its susceptibility to political influence from member states.
This is not the first time the U.S. has attempted to withdraw from the WHO. In 2020, Trump initiated a withdrawal process which was later reversed by President Joe Biden in 2021. The latest executive order indicates that the Trump administration will seek to retract the previous withdrawal notification sent to the United Nations.
