Two fishermen tragically lost their lives after being swept off rocks at a dangerous fishing spot in Sydney’s south. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, May 27, when the men, who have not yet been formally identified, were fishing off rocks on Cape Solander Drive at Kurnell around 2.45pm. Despite efforts to rescue them, they were unable to be revived, according to NSW Police.
Marine rescuers, lifeguards, police, and paramedics all participated in the search and recovery operation. The area where the incident took place is known as a high-risk rock-fishing location where anglers are required to wear life jackets.
This law was implemented following a coronial inquest into nine rock-fishing-related fatalities in NSW, which concluded that safety advice and education alone were not sufficient to prevent such tragedies. A report is currently being prepared for the coroner.
