Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, expressed his surprise and concern over President Biden’s frail appearance during a debate with former President Donald J. Trump. In an interview with WPRI, Mr. Whitehouse urged transparency from the Biden campaign regarding the president’s current condition, stating that he had never seen Mr. Biden in such a state before.
Representative Debbie Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, also voiced her concerns about the Biden campaign’s handling of the situation. She criticized reports that the campaign was sticking to their strategy and considering only one interview or news conference to address the president’s condition, emphasizing the need for the campaign to listen to feedback from the public.
Despite efforts by the Biden campaign and allies to calm fears among Democrats and donors, questions about Mr. Biden’s fitness for office continue to persist. Both Ms. Dingell and Mr. Whitehouse’s remarks highlight ongoing doubts about the president’s ability to serve another term, with the Democrats’ nominating convention approaching in August.
