The University of Toronto is seeking court authorization for police intervention to remove protesters who are refusing to vacate a pro-Palestinian encampment established on campus earlier this month.
The university has filed a motion in court to put an end to the demonstration, citing irreparable harm to the institution caused by the encampment.
One of the requests made by the university is for the court to grant an order allowing police to “arrest and remove individuals, objects, and structures” that violate the terms of a court order.
Additionally, the university is looking to prevent protesters from obstructing access to university property or erecting fences, tents, or other structures on campus.
Despite a trespass notice issued last week with a deadline for Monday morning, the protesters have stated their intention to resist and have not complied with the directive to vacate the site.
Similar encampments have emerged on university campuses across Canada in recent months, prompting several schools to explore or take legal action against the demonstrators.
