The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, commended Canada for reducing the number of new refugees being resettled to help stabilize the housing market and prevent backlash against newcomers. Grandi met with the prime minister in Ottawa to discuss this issue, following the government’s announcement of a 20% cut in overall immigration levels for 2025, which includes refugees and protected persons.
While migrant groups like the Canadian Council for Refugees have criticized this decision, calling it dangerous and a betrayal, Grandi emphasized that Canada remains a global leader in resettlement. He also warned that in times of economic or housing crises, pro-refugee sentiment can be fragile and shouldn’t be jeopardized.
Grandi expressed hope that once Canada has the necessary resources and housing infrastructure in place to properly integrate newcomers, the resettlement targets can be increased again.
