The Grain Workers Union Local 333 has issued a 72-hour strike notice to the employer of grain workers at terminals in Metro Vancouver. According to a statement posted on Facebook, the union served the notice at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with plans to begin job action on Tuesday.
The union’s bargaining committee made the decision to issue the notice after accusing the Vancouver Terminal Elevators Association of not putting in enough effort during negotiations the previous week. The union now awaits a new contract proposal from the employer.
Despite providing the employer with a “comprehensive package” last Thursday, the union claims that the association did not offer a counter proposal the following day.
On the other hand, the Vancouver Terminal Elevators Association stated that conciliation with the union, with the assistance of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, concluded on August 26. However, they were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract, and the union has been in a legal strike position since the previous Tuesday.
The affected operations include Viterra’s Cascadia and Pacific Terminals, Richardson International Terminal, Cargill Limited Terminal, G3 Terminal Vancouver, and Alliance Grain Terminal, all situated in Vancouver and North Vancouver.
