A leaked internal video from the CEO of UnitedHealth Group
A leaked internal video from the CEO of UnitedHealth Group shows him telling employees of the company there is no upside to talking with the media.
CEO Andrew Witty made the internal address days after the shocking Midtown assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50.
The footage of Wittyâs remarks was shared by journalist Ken Klippenstein on his website.
âYouâve seen a lot of media interest in this situation with a huge amount of misinformation and frankly offensive communication,â Witty told employees, maligning what he called the âaggressive, inappropriate and disrespectfulâ coverage of Thompsonâs murder.
âPeople are writing things we simply donât recognize,â he added.
âIâd like to give you a little bit of advice around the media,â Witty continued. âMy strong advice and request to everybody is just donât engage with the media. If youâre approached, I would recommend not responding and, if necessary, simply refer them to our own media organization.â
The groupâs CEO also reassured workers they were safe, and discussed the heightened security measures the company has taken since Wednesdayâs slaying.
He also called Thompson âa truly extraordinary person who touched the lives of countless people throughout our organization and far beyond.â
Thompson was gunned down outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown just before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
His killing was caught on surveillance cameras.
Thompson was shot first in the back, and stumbled to the ground before being shot again, with at least one bullet entering a leg.
The NYPD is investigating a possible message the killer left on the bullet shell casings.
Sources said the masked assassin scratched the words âdeny,â âdeposeâ and âdefendâ into the rounds.
âOur priorities are, first and foremost, supporting Brianâs family; ensuring the safety of our employees; and working with law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice,â Witty added. âWe, at UnitedHealth Group, will continue to be there for those who depend upon us for their health care. We ask that everyone respect the familyâs privacy as they mourn the loss of their husband, father, brother and friend.â
