The Biden administration has announced a new $1.5 billion aid package for Ukraine, focusing on the energy sector and humanitarian services as the country faces Russia’s attack. The latest funding includes $500 million for energy assistance and the redirection of $324 million towards emergency energy infrastructure repair. Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled the assistance package at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, where she met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The aid will help repair and expand energy infrastructure, encourage private sector investment, and protect energy systems in Ukraine. Additionally, over $379 million in humanitarian assistance will be provided to address urgent needs of refugees, internally displaced persons, and conflict-affected communities. The funding will support food assistance, health services, shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene services for vulnerable Ukrainians.
Furthermore, the State Department plans to provide an additional $300 million in civilian security assistance to support Ukrainian border guards and law enforcement. The assistance aims to help Ukrainians operate safely on the front lines of the conflict to defend territory, rescue civilians, and protect critical infrastructure. The United States has already dedicated nearly $1.5 billion to Ukraine’s energy sector since the start of the war.
President Biden, along with national security adviser Jake Sullivan, participated in various events with President Zelenskyy, including signing a bilateral security agreement and commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Sullivan will continue to represent the United States at upcoming summits to address the return of Ukrainian children from Russia and enhance energy security.
The aid package demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the United States to support Ukraine in the face of aggression and humanitarian challenges.
