The Biden administration has given the green light to a new $360 million arms sale to Taiwan, providing the island with a significant number of armed drones, missile equipment, and related support materials, as per a statement released by the State Department. This move is expected to provoke strong reactions from China.
Although not a surprising development, the announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has expressed its intention to unify it by force if necessary.
The weapons sale includes 291 Altius-600M systems, which are unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) equipped with warheads, as well as 720 Switchblade drones, also known as “extended-range loitering munitions”, according to the State Department.
The State Department justified the sale by stating that it serves the national, economic, and security interests of the United States by supporting Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain a credible defensive capability. It is also intended to enhance the security of Taiwan, contribute to political stability, maintain military balance, and promote economic progress in the region.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude towards the United States for approving the arms sale, emphasizing that such support is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its national defense through military acquisitions and domestic efforts.
The U.S. government asserted that this arms transfer would not upset the military balance in the region. While not unprecedented, the announcement comes amidst efforts by both the United States and China to ease tensions in recent months.
