U.S. and Canadian fighter jets intercepted four Chinese and Russian military aircraft off the coast of Alaska on July 24, according to the North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD).
The Russian and Chinese military aircraft, intercepted in international airspace, did not breach American or Canadian sovereign airspace, as stated by NORAD. The recent activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not considered a threat, according to the press release.
NORAD emphasized its commitment to monitoring competitor activity near North America and responding as needed. The organization utilizes a defense network of satellites, radars, and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft for appropriate action in defense of North America.
On the same day as the aircraft interception, President Joe Biden announced his decision to not seek reelection in 2024.
Prior to his reelection announcement, President Biden cautioned China about supporting Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, warning of potential economic consequences. At a NATO summit, he mentioned the possibility of economic penalties for the CCP if it aids Russia with arms.
