U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles has been instructed to return the bronze medal she earned in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics last week. This decision came after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal by Chiles’s coach, which had initially placed her in third position ahead of Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the reassignment of the medal within a day of the court’s ruling.
The IOC stated that the bronze medal would now be awarded to Ana Barbosu of Romania. Discussions are underway with the Romanian NOC for the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC to arrange the return of the bronze medal.
The court’s decision was based on the fact that Chiles’s inquiry regarding her score was made after the designated time limit, rendering it invalid. As a result, Chiles’s score was adjusted to 13.666, while Barbosu’s score stood at 13.700.
Following the ruling, Chiles expressed on Instagram that she would be taking a break from social media for her mental well-being. USA Gymnastics defended their appeal as being made in good faith and in accordance with the rules to ensure accurate scoring.
Despite the setback, Team USA announced their intention to appeal the decision, citing errors in the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation.
