The U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered over 52,000 Chinese nationals along the U.S. northern and southern border in fiscal year 2023.
High-level talks between U.S. and Chinese officials have taken place regarding the deportation of Chinese nationals, as stated by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Mayorkas mentioned in an interview with NBC News on April 6 that efforts have been made to collaborate with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to repatriate individuals deemed ineligible to stay in the United States.
During a meeting with Chinese Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong in Vienna in February, Mayorkas discussed the issue with the aim of securing China’s cooperation in deporting Chinese nationals who have violated U.S. border laws.
“We are currently in a ‘wait-and-see’ mode but are actively engaging with our counterparts,” Mayorkas commented to the news outlet. “It’s a process.”
