The Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will return to the United States in 2034, with Salt Lake City, Utah, announced as the host city. The announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 23 confirmed Salt Lake City as the host for the 2034 Winter Games. This will be the second set of Olympic Games scheduled for the United States in the next decade, with Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Summer Games.
The selection of Salt Lake City as the host city comes amidst tensions between the IOC and the U.S. government over a federal investigation into doping allegations against Chinese swimmers. The Salt Lake City Committee and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) have affirmed their commitment to the World Anti-Doping Code to ensure fair play during the games.
Leading the delegation for the 2034 Games are Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, USOPC President Gene Sykes, and Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games President Fraser Bullock. The IOC aims to drive long-term benefits for the region through sustainable practices and community engagement, in line with the Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5.
IOC President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in Salt Lake City’s ability to organize exceptional games, emphasizing the legacy of the 2002 Games in the region. Utah’s strong community spirit and support were highlighted by Gov. Cox, who stated that hosting the Olympics and Paralympics goes beyond just competition.
