The Supreme Court has added four new cases to their docket for the 2024 and 2025 term. These cases involve wage laws, a telecommunications firm, a mail and wire fraud case, and chip manufacturing giant Nvidia.
The first case, EMD Sales v. Carrera, deals with how difficult it should be for employers to prove that their workers qualify for exemptions from overtime pay under U.S. wage laws. The Supreme Court will review a lower court decision that imposed a higher bar on the company to show that sales representatives were exempt from overtime pay.
In another case, Wisconsin Bell v. U.S., the Court will determine if reimbursement requests submitted to the Federal Communications Commission’s E-rate program can be considered claims under the False Claims Act. Wisconsin Bell is challenging a lawsuit that alleged the company defrauded the FCC program.
The Court also agreed to hear a petition in Kousisis v. United States, a criminal mail and wire fraud case that will evaluate when the Department of Justice can prosecute individuals who did not defraud any entity out of property or money.
Additionally, the Court will review Nvidia Corp v. E. Ohman J., a class-action lawsuit involving Nvidia. The lawsuit accuses Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang of making public comments that contradicted internal company data about its involvement in the cryptocurrency industry.
